Particles play an important role in battery production. These can be either graphite particles for anodes, e.g. NMC precursor and lithium hydroxides or lithium carbonates for cathodes or ceramic particles for separators. A large specific surface area and homogeneous particle form are important for improved reaction capability of the final battery cell. The porosity of anodes or separator membranes after final processing is another quality-critical parameter. In order to improve battery performance and reduce production costs precise control of particle size and morphology as well as porosity and specific surface are essential.
For this application, Microtrac offers a complete portfolio: analyzers with combined laser diffraction and image analysis for particle size and shape analysis, as well as analyzers using gas adsorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry to determine surface area and pore size distribution.
